We all love a good freebie, and the promise of free Dunkin’ coffee and donuts is hard to resist. Unfortunately, scammers are taking advantage of popular promotions like the “Dunkin’ Runs On You” survey to trick unsuspecting users.

One of our clients recently encountered this firsthand. While searching for the survey, they were led to a series of fake websites mimicking the real deal. These sites ultimately led to a scareware page displaying a phone number promising tech support. The scammer’s goal? To gain access to the client’s computer.

Here’s what the search results looked like:

Protect Yourself:

  • Be cautious of what you click: Always double-check the URL before entering any information. Official websites usually have a secure “https://” address.
  • Never trust phone numbers in pop-ups: Scammers often use scare tactics to get you to call them.
  • Don’t give anyone remote access to your computer unless you trust them completely: This includes tech support services you find through random pop-ups.

If you encounter a scareware page:

  1. Don’t panic.
  2. Restart your computer: Press Ctrl+Alt+Del, then click the power button and select “Restart”
  3. If you’re still concerned, call your trusted IT provider. For our clients, that’s P3C Technologies!
